Resolution

The Electoral College is the best means of electing a president compared to any others that might be devised.

For the affirmative:

Richard A. Epstein is the Peter and Kirsten Bedford Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution, the Laurence A. Tisch Professor of Law, New York University Law School, and a senior lecturer at the University of Chicago. The author of many books and articles, Richard researches and writes in a broad range of constitutional, economic, historical, and philosophical subjects. His most recent book, The Dubious Morality of Modern Administrative Law, was released in March 2020. Richard appears on “The Libertarian,” a weekly podcast sponsored by the Hoover Institution that features a conversation with him on issues of the day. This will mark his third appearance as a debater at the Soho Forum.

For the negative:

Lawrence Lessig is the Roy L. Furman Professor of Law and Leadership at Harvard Law School. Prior to returning to Harvard, he taught at Stanford Law School, where he founded the Center for Internet and Society. He clerked for Judge Richard Posner on the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals and Justice Antonin Scalia on the United States Supreme Court. Lessig has focused much of his career on law and technology, especially as it affects copyright. His current work addresses “institutional corruption” — especially as that affects democracy. His most recent books include: They Don't Represent Us: Reclaiming Our Democracy (November 2019), Fidelity & Constraint: How the Supreme Court Has Read the American Constitution (May 2019), America, Compromised (2018).
